A couple loud weekends… and then a quiet one…… and then BAM we get a $81M opening for Twisters in the largest opening ever for a natural disaster film. 31 players know what’s up as it opened on the list at the #9 spot, and will quickly climb thanks to a current 92% RT Audience score + an ‘A-‘ CinemaScore. It’s a good thing it earned so much up front, however, as next weekend’s new release will most definitely cut into its holds.

Holdover News

  • Inside Out 2 earned another $12M in its 6th weekend thanks to only a -35.7% drop. It’s now just shy of $600M at $596M total, still the #15 movie ALL TIME. It’s possible that this is the weekend it passes #14 Incredibles 2 ($608M).
  • Despicable Me 4 wasn’t hurt by the success of Twisters, as its $24M (-44.0%) has it now at $260M. $300M will be a piece of cake.
  • Bad Boys: Ride or Die surprisingly held steady with only a -35.7% drop and $2M. Reaching $200M will be a grind, but doable.
  • After last weekend’s increase in theaters, Apes took a massive hit of -855 to reduce all the way to 150 theaters. A -76.0% drop was no surprise as it didn’t even clear $100K. This is likely the end for it.
  • A Quiet Place: Day One held at -44% for the second straight weekend, and its $6M moved it up to $127M total. But it no longer appears to have a shot at catching Apes with the two newest releases fighting for the same audience.
  • IF has stopped reporting box office and closes out at #6 with $111M.
  • Fall Guy also stopped reporting box office and closes out at #7 with $92.9M.
  • Garfield ($68K) is still kicking and scratching at #8 with $91.7M, but this should also be the end.
  • Furiosa’s $67M just got knocked down to #10, and this is the last time we will see it on the list.

Next Weekend: The only movie this summer that was unanimously selected: Deadpool & Wolverine. With an early weekend projection of $180-220M, it likely would have been tops on our list if not for Inside Out 2. We collectively picked it with an average placement of 1.9 (highest of the summer), so it’ll be interesting to see how it fares through only 5.5 weekends.
