After two straight weekends of new entries to the Top 10, the list stays intact with an overall quiet performance this time around from the newcomers. Naturally that bode well for the best-performing holdovers. The weekend’s top performance by a new release was the surprising $22M for Longlegs, largely exceeding its $16M projection. Neon’s biggest opening ever wasn’t just the best of the year for a horror film, it was the highest-grossing opening for an indie horror film over the past decade. It was also Nicholas Cage’s best opening since 2009’s Knowing ($24M). Nice job, Nick! While this was a fantastic start, the long-term success is a bit uncertain as its current 65% RT Audience Score was met with a quite low ‘C+’ CinemaScore. Rude. Let’s see how it fares over the coming weeks against Neon’s prior hits:

Despite getting an ‘A-‘ CinemaScore to match its current 90% RT Audience score, Fly Me to the Moon further disappointed against projection with only a $9M opening. Those scores should give it decent holds, but it just wasn’t a good enough start to threaten the Top 10.

Holdover News
- Inside Out 2 increased its theater count by +55 to pull in another $19.9M (-34.1%). It’s now at $571M total and is the #15 movie ALL TIME (+3 from last weekend). Next up is #14 Incredibles 2 ($608M). That mark should hit in a couple more weekends.
- As expected, Despicable Me 4 shot all the way up to #2 in its second weekend after being the top performer with $43M (-41.9%). An extra +21 theaters instead of an expected drop was a bonus.
- Bad Boys: Ride or Die slid to #3 with a $4M weekend (-36.1%), where it will sit for a bit longer. It still had a good hold despite a -444 drop in theaters. $200M is still a possibility.
- Apes actually jumped +305 in theaters, but just $400K is signaling the end on the run as it is now at #4. Crossing $170M is still impressive.
- A Quiet Place: Day One had a good third weekend hold of -44.9% for $11M and climbed up to #5. It has some work to do, however, if it is to catch Apes.
- IF is now playing on Paramount+, and after $129K from just 158 theaters its time is over. It should hold onto #6 for 2 more weekends.
- Once again Fall Guy ($335K) out-earned Garfield ($186K) despite being in half the # of theaters (111 vs. 215). It simply will not cede that #7 spot.
- Furiosa officially ended box office reporting on 7/11 with a final tally of $67M. #9 will be short-lived.
- The Strangers: Chapter 1 still sits at #10 with a final tally of $35M. This will finally be the last weekend on the list.
Next Weekend: Twisters (picked by 31 players) has the weekend all to itself, and the early numbers are promising with an expected $60-75M opening and 72% Critics score on RT. A start like that should place it immediately at #9.
