The weekend was a bit heartbreaking for the two players who picked The Bikeriders, as the widest of the new releases stalled out to a sub-$10M opening. Their summers are now basically over as they’ll get run over in any kind of Deviation tiebreaker.
No, this weekend was not about any new movies; it was about the juggernaut that is Inside Out 2. $101M in its SECOND weekend brings the new Pixar sensation to a ridiculous $356M… which already equals what the first movie earned in 2015. IO2 just had the best Second Weekend ever for an animated film (last year’s Super Mario Bros. Movie did $92M), and is now the highest grossing movie of 2024 both domestically and globally (Dune: Part Two did $282M / $711M). And for good measure, IO2 just became only the 7th film all time to earn $100M in its second weekend:
Year | Movie | 2nd Wknd | Total |
2024 | Inside Out 2 | $101M | ??? |
2019 | Avengers: Endgame | $147M | $858M |
2018 | Avengers: Infinity War | $114M | $678M |
2018 | Black Panther | $111M | $700M |
2015 | Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens | $149M | $936M |
2015 | Jurassic World | $106M | $652M |
2012 | The Avengers | $103M | $623M |
With the best second weekend hold of the summer (-34.4%), IO2 now sits atop our Top 10. Based on the above data we could very well be looking at the next $600M movie, of which there are currently 14 total. Below are what each of them earned in their 2nd weekends (ranked by Total box office):
Year | Movie | 2nd Wknd | Total |
2015 | Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens | $149M | $936M |
2019 | Avengers: Endgame | $147M | $858M |
2021 | Spider-Man: No Way Home | $84M | $814M |
2009 | Avatar | $75M | $785M |
2022 | Top Gun: Maverick | $90M | $718M |
2018 | Black Panther | $111M | $700M |
2022 | Avatar: The Way of Water | $63M | $684M |
2018 | Avengers: Infinity War | $114M | $678M |
1997 | Titanic | $35M | $674M |
2015 | Jurassic World | $106M | $652M |
2023 | Barbie | $93M | $636M |
2012 | The Avengers | $103M | $623M |
2017 | Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi | $71M | $620M |
2018 | Incredibles 2 | $80M | $608M |

Holdover News
- Excellent holds all around for the remaining Top 10 movies, as only Strangers and Tarot didn’t do sub-50%.
- Other than the #1 and #2 flip flop, every other movie held position.
- Another $3.8M for Apes, but with IO2 quickly doubling up its total, Apes is no longer King and now sits at #2.
- Bad Boys is still at #3 after another $18M, and could be one spot higher after next weekend.
- IF had an amazing hold of -24.7% and is close to crossing $110M.
- Fall Guy crossed $90M as expected, and it should be noted that aside from weekend #2 (-50.6%) every other weekend has been a sub-50% hold.
- Garfield had the best hold of the weekend with $3.7M at -20.9% and now sits at $85M. It’ll have no problem moving past Fall Guy.
- Furiosa continues to make millions and should eventually scratch its way past $70M. Still so sad.
Next Weekend: The final weekend of June should be explosive as we get both A Quiet Place: Day One (picked by 37 players) and Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (11 players). While Quiet Place doesn’t yet have any reviews, Horizon 1 is unfortunately getting crushed early with poor critic reviews (47% overall with 27% from the Top Critics). Uh oh.
