This weekend we get 3 new Wide releases, and the gem is Sound of Freedom which actually opened on Tuesday July 4. This release came out of nowhere to quickly earn RT scores of 88% (critics) + 100% (audience), as well as the very rare A+ CinemaScore. Not stopping there, Freedom led the July 4 holiday date with a fast $14M. It isn’t projected to be the winner of the weekend, but it’s still worth noting how highly this film is regarded.
Based on the projections listed below this clearly isn’t expected to be a big weekend at the box office, as the 3 new releases only show $41M. COMBINED. That’s… terrible. But it at least gives the holdovers a chance to pad their own numbers. Insidious: The Red Door (selected by 1 player) is expected to lead the newcomers with $24M, but those RT scores are pretty rough to expect long-term success. Joy Ride (selected by 2 players), on the other hand, has fantastic RT scores yet is only projected to earn $8M. I just don’t get it.
