Another excellent weekend in the SMP as we got our fourth $100M opening of the summer from The Fantastic Four: First Steps ($117M). While that result certainly isn’t as strong as its $136M projection, by Wednesday this week it should already be the highest grossing film of the F4 franchise (2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer leads with $131M). Among MCU films its opening landed at #18 of 37. Our newest F4 immediately joins the Top 10 at #9 and should reach #5 after next weekend.

With August hitting the calendar on Friday and five full weekends remaining in the SMP, we should now start paying attention to the Scoreboard page. At present, our leader (Thomas F) is sitting on a perfect 10 score thanks to brilliant selections of both F1 and Final Destination. 14 players are right behind with 9 correct picks, led by JP B and Kelly P.

The intrigue over the next month will be if Elio, sitting on just $71M after its first sub-$1M weekend, can hold off all remaining newcomers to help Thomas hang onto #1. There are no more ‘major’ releases this summer by SMP standards, but there are 4 more legit options over the next two weeks that could threaten perfection.

Holdover News

  • #1 Lilo & Stitch remains at #40 on the All Time list at $420M. Next on the list at #39 is 2006’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($423M).
  • #2 Jurassic World: Rebirth surpassed $300M to hold onto #2, and might crack the Top 100 All Time after next weekend.
  • #3 Superman moved up one notch to $289M, and might also crack the Top 100 All Time after next weekend.
  • #4 How To Train Your Dragon slipped a spot (as expected) at $257M, and should drop one more soon as F4 will be moving its way up the list.
  • #5 M:I – Final Reckoning holding steady at $196M.
  • #6 Thunderbolts ‘ prayers were answered as a 25 theater increase this weekend resulted in a +963% performance and allowed it to FINALLY break $190M.
  • #7 F1 holding steady at $165M after an excellent -36.2% hold (best of the weekend).
  • #8 FD: Bloodlines is officially done at the box office and will just hold on at $138M.
  • #10 Elio is now on the chopping block.

Next Weekend: Three Wide releases coming up, with selections in The Bad Guys 2 (6 players) and The Naked Gun (1 player). I’d have to imagine that one of these would be able to reach $75M to steal that #10 spot.
