The summer box office is really heating up as we just had another new release exceed its projection. A Quiet Place: Day One (picked by 37 players) might have barely lost the weekend to Inside Out 2, but its $52M opening is now the highest of the three-film apocalyptic alien invasion franchise (AQP did $50M in 2018 and AQP2 did $47M in 2021). It should also be mentioned that $52M is the 4th biggest opening of the summer. With a B+ CinemaScore and 85% RT Critics rating it’ll hold well enough to be a Top 10 lock.
Our other high-profile debut, unfortunately, did not fare as well as Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (11 players) opened to just $11M. Hammered by both critics and audience, and saddled with a 3-hour run time that limits its number of showings, this movie is toast. Our single player that picked the mid-August sequel Chapter 2 already knows their summer is kaput As a Warner Bros. production, Chapter 3 (already In Development) might just go straight to MAX.

Holdover News
- With $57M in its third weekend, IO2 is now at $469M total and the #24 movie ALL TIME. Next up: #19 Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019) at $515M might become the highest movie knocked off along with a couple other animated hits in 2019’s Frozen II ($477M) and 2016’s Finding Dory ($486M).
- Apes is clutching tightly onto that #2 spot with $168M, but by next weekend that spot will be all Bad Boys (currently $165M).
- After 7 weekends IF ($109M) just saw its theater count cut in half, but its hold on #4 won’t be threatened until AQPD1 comes knocking.
- Speaking of clutching onto spots, Fall Guy ($91M) held off Garfield ($89M) for another weekend despite also losing half its theaters. Garfield losing nearly half its own is likely why.
- Furiosa ($67M) just had an axe taken to its theater count, and after a -71.9% drop it’s no longer got a shot at $70M.
- Strangers ($35M) and Watchers ($18M) are still hanging on while Tarot just dropped out. Watchers will definitely be knocked out by Wednesday.
Next Weekend: The July 4th holiday weekend fireworks start early as Despicable Me 4 (picked by 42 players) hits theaters on Wednesday. Early Boxoffice Pro forecasts are $65-85M for 3-Day and $100-125M for 5-Day. The early 65% RT Critic rating won’t matter as this could become our next $300M movie. Also selected this weekend is MaXXXine (1 player), which has an early 77% RT Critics rating.
Everyone have a FUN and SAFE holiday!!
