After two straight weekends of underperformers our summer is right back on track with the live-action remake How To Train Your Dragon scoring the second biggest weekend so far ($84M), beating its projection by a cool 16%. Only Lilo at $146M did better. This was easily the best opening of the HTTYD franchise, as the previous high was 2019’s The Hidden World at $55M. With Pixar’s latest coming out next weekend it’ll be interesting to see what the second weekend hold will look like.

Materialists at $12M fell slightly short of making an early Top 10 appearance.

And speaking of recent underperformers, it needs to be said that Ballerina suffered a second weekend drop of 60.2%. Brutal. I just don’t get it, as I saw the movie and found it to be as enjoyable as any other in the Wick franchise. It was just as action packed, violent and colorful as any of them, and there’s admittedly more screen time for JW than the trailers let on. Lionsgate did the movie no favors with their poor marketing strategy, and all of us who selected it are suffering 🙁

Top 10 IN

  • #5 How To Train Your Dragon (2025)

Top 10 OUT

  • Clown in a Cornfield

Next Weekend: Our second of two “major” movie weekends brings us Elio (selected by 32 players) and 28 Years Later (17 players). Neither audience will impact the other’s box office, so we should see two new entries in the Top 10 by this time next week.
