THUD – That’s the sound of Supergirl crashing back to Earth after falling short of even the lowest projections. $37M is our second-lowest opening this summer among major films (only Masters of the Universe’s $29M was worse). This is Mortal Kombat II ($38M) territory. Or worse… Joker: Folie a Deux ($37M). Doh! It’s a far cry from the $125M that Superman opened to one year ago. It would appear that this WB/DCU/Gunn misfire is another example of a studio investing heavily in a film that nobody really asked for. That, and the fatigue movie fans have when the same character is already introduced just a few years prior (Sasha Calle in 2023’s The Flash) before rebooting once again. So exhausting.

Due to the bust opening for Supergirl we have no new entries in the Top 10 this week. Just some current list shuffling.

Scoreboard Leaders

And with the Top 10 shuffle we have a new sequence at the top of our Scoreboard. Same names, just in a different order with a new leader… for now. I have a feeling we won’t see Steven atop the list after next weekend.

Holdover News

  • We have a new #1, as after just 10 days Toy Story 5 has nearly hit the $300M plateau. Its 2nd Weekend multiplier of 1.87x is the 2nd best of the summer. At $298.0M it is also now #121 on the All Time domestic box office list, one spot ahead of 2010’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 ($296.3M). It could jump up all the way into the Top 75 after next weekend.
  • #2 Obsession stays in place at $233.8M after another amazing hold in its 7th weekend (-27.6%). Its incredible run has it now at #191 on the All Time list, one spot ahead of 2000’s Cast Away ($233.6M). It has a good chance to reach #175 after next weekend.
  • The Devil Wears Prada 2 falls from #1 to #3 after a $313K weekend, a sign that it is now in its final weeks. $219.8M will keep it just outside the Top 200 All Time, but still in the top half of our SMP.
  • After moving up one spot last weekend, #4 Backrooms slides back that same spot despite another solid $4M (-39.8%) in its 5th weekend. At $184M it’ll reach $190M easily and push to $200M.
  • #5 Mandalorian and Grogu slips a spot after losing another 750 theaters. $175M is a solid number for a glorified TV episode, and $180M remains in play.
  • #6 Scary Movie holds after a $3M weekend (-52%). It finally cracked $100M, which is nice, but not nice enough.
  • #7 Disclosure Day jumps a spot on our list with a $8M weekend (-53.4%), but just like Scary Movie it also wasn’t able to hit $100M after 3 weekends. At $94M it is tracking the same slow pace.
  • #8 Mortal Kombat II slides one more with just $23K from 26 theaters. Based on the failures lower on the list, it may just hang around in our Top 10 through mid-July.
  • #9 The Sheep Detectives finally falls below $1M in its 8th weekend with $500K, but good enough to hold place at $65M. And bonus… it’s now playing on Amazon Prime.
  • #10 Masters of the Universe had a rough 4th weekend drop of -62.5% for $2M. At just $62M it’s only still in the Top 10 because of Supergirl’s misfire.

Next Weekend: The upcoming holiday weekend gets an early start with Minions & Monsters (near unanimous at 37 selections) opening on Wednesday 7/1. M&M going head-to-head with Toy Story 5 should be wild.
