With late August routinely being a dumping ground for studios wanting to write off bad investments, it’s no surprise that the “winner” of the weekend was the theatrical release of a current Netflix hit in true “sing-along” fashion. Playing in just 1,700 theaters and only on Saturday and Sunday, KPop Demon Hunters raked in a fast $18M. Exhibitors who participated in the limited event (not you, AMC) had to be grateful, salvaging what would have been a dreadful weekend otherwise.
No changes to our Top 10 list, meaning no changes to our Scoreboard. Only 7 days remain in the SMP leaving little time for folks to steal that 3rd Place prize from JP. Just know that it isn’t only Top 10 adjustment that could shake up the Scoreboard, as Freakier Friday ($8.8M) and possibly even The Bad Guys 2 ($5.1M) are about to surpass #11 Elio’s $72.9M. Oh boy!

Holdover News
- #1 Lilo & Stitch is still playing in theaters after 14 weeks, and at $421.8M is still #40 on the All Time list.
- #2 Superman made another $3.4M, and at $346.9M has moved up from #79 to #76 on the All Time list. Next up is 2014’s American Sniper at $350.1M.
- #3 Jurassic World: Rebirth made $2.1M, and at $335.5M has moved up from #88 to #83 on the All Time list. Next up is 2015’s Minions at $336.0M.
- #4 How To Train Your Dragon apparently didn’t like the recent hold success of F4 as Universal ADDED 935 theaters for a +108% weekend gain of $388K. Its current total of $262.5M is currently #145 on the All Time list.
- #5 The Fantastic Four: First Steps enjoyed another sub-50% weekend drop at -33.5%, good for $6.0M and a current total of $257.3M. It just might jump one more spot after next weekend.
- #6 M:I – Final Reckoning is done $197.4M.
- #7 Thunderbolts* is done at $190.3M.
- #8 F1 made another $1.7M, but at $185.8M it likely doesn’t have enough gas in the tank to make one more move.
- #9 Final Dest: Bloodlines is done $138.1M.
- #10 Weapons enjoyed an excellent third weekend hold of -37% for another $15.4M, cracking the $100M plateau for a total $115.6M. That -37% hold was the best of the summer for third weekends (Karate Kid: Legends surprisingly did -38.7%).
Next Weekend: The final weekend of the summer won’t bring any threats to the Top 10, but it will bring us The Toxic Avenger!
