Another weekend, another Top 10 entry. And a bit of Top 10 shakeup to boot. Despicable Me 4 most definitely did not disappoint this July 4th holiday, as $75M over the 3-Day weekend and a $122M 5-Day total greatly exceeded its $60M/$104M projection. DM4 can thank that 90% RT Audience score and ‘A’ CinemaScore for the assist. This franchise is no stranger to July 4 weekend, as DM4 happens to be the 4th appearance:
3-Day | Full Holiday | Total
Despicable Me 4 | 2024 | $75M | $122M (5-Day) | ?? |
Minions: The Rise of Gru | 2022 | $107M | $123M (4-Day) | $370M |
Despicable Me 3 | 2017 | $72M | $99M (5-Day) | $264M |
Despicable Me 2 | 2013 | $83M | $143M (5-Day) | $368M |
Just imagine what it could have done had there not been a record-breaking Pixar movie opening 3 weekends prior. As it is, DM4 has immediately seized the #4 spot in our Top 10.
The other Wide release selected this summer, MaXXXine, enjoyed the biggest opening of that horror trilogy with $6.7M despite its lowest RT rating along with only a ‘B’ CinemaScore. Surprisingly, it opened on fewer screens than either predecessor. With how badly the non-Top 10 have performed this summer it’ll be interesting seeing how high this climbs over the clunkers.
Theaters | RT Rating | Opening | Total
MaXXXine | 2024 | 2,450 | 75% | $6.7M | ?? |
Pearl | 2022 | 2,935 | 92% | $3.1M | $9.4M |
X | 2022 | 2,865 | 94% | $4.2M | $11.7M |

Holdover News
- This was a harsh weekend for the holdovers as they just got MaXXXine’d pretty good with severely-slashed theater counts to clear room for DM4. The hit counts were Bikeriders (-1130), Garfield (-956), Apes (-950), IF (-807), Inside Out 2 (-680), Bad Boys (-668), Watchers (-521), Furiosa (-297) and Fall Guy (-282).
- Another $30M for Inside Out 2 to tighten its grip on the #1 spot. It’s now at $534M total and the #18 movie ALL TIME. By the time of this writing it has already knocked off #17 The Dark Knight ($534M), and #16 The Lion King – 2019 ($543M) will also fall by Sunday. It might need another weekend to catch #15 The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($574M).
- Bad Boys: Ride or Die just moved up into #2 with a $6M weekend, but it’ll be short-lived. $200M is a possibility, but DM4 will easily claim this spot after next weekend.
- After 9 weekends Apes is now at the point where it’s earning less than $1M, and its current #3 spot is also going to be short-lived.
- At just $297K in its 8th weekend, IF is simply playing out the string to try to piece together another million. It’ll fall out of #5 very soon.
- Weekend #2 was a steep drop for A Quiet Place: Day One at -60.5%. With a current $94M it just jumped up to #6, and another bump is in sight.
- Despite losing over half its remaining screens, Fall Guy somehow INCREASED it’s hold with +128.9%, stiff-arming Garfield with a better weekend ($870K vs. $510K) to barely stay ahead by $1.1M total. I love it!
- Playing on only 121 screens, this has to be the end for Furiosa as it only earned $90K. Please make it available on Max soon.
- The Strangers: Chapter 1 did not report any box office after July 4, so it’s going to sit on that #10 spot at $35M until something better comes along. It’ll likely hold it for one more weekend.
Next Weekend: We drop down to two Wide releases, both selected as fliers: Fly Me to the Moon (1 player) and Longlegs (1 player). The RomCom Moon doesn’t yet have any reviews, but the horror/thriller Longlegs already has a 97% RT Critic rating thanks to “a nightmarishly gonzo performance by Nicolas Cage.” Oooooooo.
